ARETE FELLOWSHIP

The Arete Fellowship is an 8-week seminar programme aimed to help you think about how you can have a positive impact on the world. Each week, fellows will read, think about and discuss key ideas and concepts from a range of disciplines related to doing good effectively. We expect it to take a total of 3-3.5 hours each week (~2 hours of reading/exercises each week and 1 hour 30 mins in a discussion group).

This syllabus is based on a similar programme at University of Oxford; it is also hosted by other universities throughout the world, including CambridgeHarvardStanfordYale, and others. It has been lightly edited by the exec at EA Durham so that it fits easier into the typical Durham term.

Topics covered will include: research into effectiveness and impact, effective charities, animals and moral consideration, the moral status of future generations, emerging technologies, existential risk and high-impact careers. Readings are ordered by importance so please do not worry if you are occasionally unable to complete everything.
